I know I already tried my hand at an ‘origin story’, but I thought I’d try again starting from when she meets the team…here goes: (Thanks to NYC for beta reading this!!)

There was a Penguin standing on the wall of Central Park Zoo. This was not an unusual sight as there were four living here. Skipper was the leader; nearly unflappable with years of commando training. Kowalski was Lieutenant and resident genius, Rico was completely psychotic, existing as the team’s demolitions expert and living utility belt, and lastly Private was the heart of the four, not quite up to speed with the rest of them but a willing learner.

This Penguin, however, was not one of the quartet. For one, she was a girl, recognisable for the markings down her face and neck, but most notably for her bright eyes, one lotus purple, and one harlequin green. They were trained on the clock tower, as if she were waiting for something.

When it came to be 5:48 am she gave a short smile, slid from the wall and started navigating her way to the centre of the Zoo. She headed with direction, obviously knowing her way around, keeping her head low just in case somebody was up at this early hour, though she doubted anyone would be.

By 5:50 she was standing a short distance away from the Penguin habitat, looking the bars up and down. She slowly reached out and touched a flipper to them, head on one side listening out for any faint sounds, but when nothing came she jumped to the railings and started scanning the surface of the habitat, looking for any traps or alarms.

Once she was happy it was safe she jumped down onto the flat concrete, wincing at the slight sound her landing made. No disturbances came from below her, so she straightened up and turned to face the clock tower once more. It was 5:52.

She spent the next eight minutes in the same position, back turned to the Penguin’s secret entrance to their HQ (a hole in the fake ice-burg hidden by their food bowl.)

When 6:00 rolled around she heard noises from the lair, and nodded. Just as she expected. A few seconds later she heard the bowl scrape across the concrete surface, as the guys came out to start their morning routine. She smiled once more. Everything was going as planned.

“INTRUDER!” Skipper yelled, leaping over and pinning the girl to the floor, locking her flippers behind her back. “Who are you working for? Hans? Blowhole?”

“That would be a lot easier to answer if you weren’t crushing me” the stranger groaned, trying to push him off.

Skipper let her up, keeping her in a headlock so she couldn’t try anything.

“I’m a transfer,” she lied.

“From Hoboken? I knew you worked for that treacherous puffin!” Skipper accused.

“What? No!” The penguin protested, “I don’t even know where Hoboken is!”

“Kowalski, Rico! Go to Alice’s office and find a crate we can get her shipped out in, uh... as soon as possible.” Skipper ordered, without a moment’s hesitation.

“Aye, Skipper” Kowalski replied as the two turned, but they were held back by the new arrival calling out:

“Wait! Why would you send me away?” she asked, “I just got here! I don’t want to be shut up in a crate again. Have you any idea how cramped it is in those things?”

“Maybe we should just let her stay for a few days, Skipper?” Private piped up, looking at the newcomer inquisitively, “After all, she is a fellow penguin; should we not be just a little hospitable?”

“Negatory! We are a four Penguin unit. There’s no room for any new recruits; especially not a girl like her. What we do is dangerous, very dangerous; not for the likes of every day civilians.” Skipper explained, releasing his grip on the mysterious penguin, tentatively deciding that she was no longer a threat.

“I’ll let that girl comment slide, but who says I’m an everyday civilian?” The outsider questioned; a daring edge to her voice.

“My team have had years of vigorous and specialised training.” Skipper told her.

“So have I,” she retorted.

“Oh, really?” Skipper asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

“I’ll prove it: me and you. One on one. Right now.” The penguin challenged, the corner of her beak flicking upward into a slight smirk.

Skipper laughed. “You can’t really think you could take me?”

“What, are you afraid?”

“Of a little girl like you? Of course not.”

“I’m taller than you, pintsize.”

Thanks Panda Smile glad you like it!!

Skipper snarled, “Fine! Get over here.” He pushed his three companions out of the way, almost toppling Private into the water, and began circling his rival.

“On three?” She suggested as they looked each other up and down.

“One…” Skipper started, the tension already rising, “…two…” Kowalski covered Private’s eyes, trying to decide whether to intervene. Rico had already grown bored of the lack of immediate action, and turned his attention to polishing a coughed-up bomb. He swung round expectantly, however, upon hearing “…three!” Both Skipper and the bright-eyed female leapt forward, colliding half way, each trying to wrestle the other to the ground, perfectly matched in strength and determination. It was Skipper’s nous as a combatant, his immaculate precision and timing, his unbeatable discipline, however, which gave him the upper flipper…

Skipper forced the girl to the ground, only for her to flip him over and pin his flippers down. In seconds he had broken free and thrown her off so she slid across the concrete, just managing to skid to a halt before falling over the edge. She picked herself up – just in time to block a flying kick sent her way by Skipper. The two were locked in combat as much mentally as they were physically, sharing a glare white-hot with anger broken suddenly by the unusually chipper suggestion; “So, let’s talk.” The feisty newcomer’s remark was enough to surprise Skipper into losing his footing, a mistake which was soon taken advantage of when she flipped him onto his back once more, their faces threateningly close.

“Talk?” Skipper half stammered.

“Yes, talk.” The female penguin grinned, somewhat menacingly, while dodging a punch Skipper threw upon getting up. “You know, chit-chat. Skipper, was it? I’m Liz. Liz Fisher.” At last the enigmatic stranger had a name.

“Fisher, eh?” Skipper chuckled, bobbing and weaving, as though the pair were locked in a seamless dance routine, practised for years. “Where are you from?”

“Ah-ah-ah,” Liz tutted, “a girl’s gotta have some mystery” she winked, while simultaneously roundhouse kicking Skipper in the side of the head. He fell to the floor, momentarily disoriented – Private let out a whimper, having managed to peek out from under Kowalski’s flipper. He hopped nervously from one foot to the other, eyes darting between the two components, as though unsure of who to root for. Skipper hauled himself from the ground, swinging his feet round to kick Liz twice: once hard in the flipper and the other slapping her beak with a horrible crunching noise.

“So far, I know your name. That’s it.” Skipper said, standing over Liz as she clutched her beak, grimacing in pain.

“And that’s all you’re gonna know. For now.” Liz said slowly, calculatedly. She stood up, and with almost a roar of anger she threw herself with all her energy at Skipper, who quickly pushed back with all his might.

Rico sensed the fight was reaching its climax as he drooled, transfixed by the violence like a child watching its favourite television show. Skipper and Liz were both weakening, but remained locked, each immovable, resorting to verbal combat as they hurled insults at one another.

“Pipsqueak!”

“Weakling!”

“Knee-high!”

“Princess!”

“Thumbelina!” That one got Skipper really angry, but he struggled to find an insult, knowing so little about Liz. At last he managed to spit something out:

“Uhh…stupid eyes!”

Liz let out a roar that could rival even Alex the Lion. “Nobody. Insults. My. Eyes!” She used the remainder of her strength to push forward, but the resultant pressure caused an almighty cracking noise to echo around the whole zoo. For a moment Liz looked perplexed, not knowing where the noise had come from. Silence hung in the air until suddenly Liz screamed in agony, falling to the floor and clutching her flipper. Rico whistled; he couldn’t have wished for a better outcome to the fight. Well, not unless it involved explosions. Private dashed to Liz’ aid, while Kowalski stayed near Skipper, not wanting to tarnish his role as second-in-command.

Private shied away when Liz let go of her flipper, revealing it to be bent backwards at an alarming angle. She clamped her beak shut to avoid screaming upon seeing this, holding back tears as she didn’t want to seem weak; especially not in front of these four.

After a few seconds she stood up and extended her non-injured flipper to shake Skipper’s. “Well played. You’re better than I thought you were.” Liz congratulated him, her voice wavering slightly.

Skipper winced at the broken flipper and then, as though wrestling with his conscience, managed to force out “Come inside, Fisher.” Liz looked momentarily astonished, not expecting to be accepted so quickly, but her steely resolve soon returned as she grinned, “Okay, half-pint.” Skipper disgruntledly ignored Liz’ comment, probably out of guilt, and beckoned to Kowalski, Private and Rico.

Liz followed the others down into the penguins’ HQ. She looked around, gingerly trying to move her broken flipper, letting out a small gasp of pain. Kowalski scurried off into his lab, and came back with a bulging med-kit, “Don’t worry, Ms Fisher,” he reassured her, “I’ll handle this.”

Liz smiled, “Call me Liz.” Private had, by now, perked up a bit.

“Is ‘Liz’ short for Elizabeth?” He asked sheepishly.

“Yep,” Liz patted his shoulder motheringly, instantly taking a shine to the youngster. Their gaze met and they shared a slight smile, too subtle for the other penguins to pick up on.

“So you’re from England then?”

“Well, sort of,” Liz stumbled, “yeah.”

“So am I!” Private bounced up and down happily.

“Oh yeah? Couldn’t have guessed!” Liz laughed, her own accent such a mash-up of different cultures that only her name could possibly have given away her origin.

By now Kowalski had managed to empty most of the contents of the med-kit onto the floor, and seemed somewhat entangled in a roll of bandage. “Um, little help?” his beak poked through his nearly mummified state. Liz jumped to his aid, deftly untangling him and helping him roll the bandage back up, all with just one good flipper.

“Thanks, uh, Liz.” Kowalski said unsurely as he began attempting to bandage the broken flipper. Skipper watched on from a few feet away, Rico off somewhere with Ms Perky.

“You may have spunk, Fisher,” Skipper started, pacing toward her, “but I still don’t trust you. We’re gonna need to do some serious talking before I let you stay in MY zoo.”

“YOUR zoo?” A voice came out of nowhere, Liz picked up on the thick accent instantly. Madagascar. The door swung open to reveal a ring-tailed lemur striding confidently into the penguins’ headquarters. Liz was confused; how could anyone – especially a lemur – so easily enter a secret base? She turned to Private, about to ask, when he answered quietly “You get used to it.”

The ring-tailed lemur, complete with an enormous crown atop his head, was followed by two more: a slouched, disgruntled-looking eye-eye and a tiny mouse lemur that danced around the ring-tail’s feet. “Get off, Mort!” the ring-tail exclaimed, “How many times do I, King Julien, have to tell you? No touching the royal feet!” He then turned to Skipper: “What do you mean ‘YOUR zoo’? I am king. This is MY zoo. Not yours.”

“There.” Kowalski said, starting to pack away his equipment.

“Thank you, Kowalski.” Liz lifted the splinted wing up and down. It only hurt a little.

“And who is this?” Julien turned to Liz. “Is it a new subject for me to be ruling over?” Then he spied her broken flipper, “Oh no. This one is defective and broken-y, bring me another one at once!” Liz glared at him.

“What are you, like some novelty act for the kids?” She challenged.

“No, silly penguin, I am King of New York!” Julien laughed.

“Oh, right,” Liz rolled her eyes, “that explains the crown. Come on – you are clearly over-compensating with that hideous thing.”

“Come, Mort, Maurice,” Julien declared, “let us be watching our show now.” The three lemurs plonked themselves down in front of the TV, pulling out popcorn as if from nowhere.

“What? No!” Skipper yelled. “Get outta here!” He pushed the intruders out, back the way they came, and slammed the door behind them. “Eugh, lemurs.” He sighed.

Anyway” Skipper continued, turning back to face Liz, “like I said: I don’t trust you. Now you either sit here and tell me your story or get out.”

Liz sighed, she knew she couldn’t tell him the truth, but she had to come up with something. “Fine,” she said, after a pause. She sat down at the table, and Skipper sat opposite, while the other three gathered expectantly.

“Like I said, I’m a transfer,” she began, “I’m from Whipsnade Zoo, in England. I’d never even left the country before they transferred me here.” Private shot her a quizzical look. Skipper didn’t seem convinced: “Wait a minute…what about your accent? You’d sound just like the Private if that were true.”

“Well,” Liz struggled to explain; she didn’t like this web of lies forming around her, “we had lots of foreign penguins come in – I’m like a parrot, always picking up accents!” She tried to laugh nonchalantly, but looked to Private nervously. He wasn’t about to sell her out, but he didn’t look happy with her.

“But your fighting style – surely you didn’t pick that up in England?” Skipper sounded accusatory, his eyes narrowed.

“Well, I had this friend. When she heard I was getting transferred, she taught me to fight. She thought I might need to defend myself. Apparently she thought correctly!”

“But how did your friend learn?” Kowalski’s input was not helping matters.

“I, uh,” Liz stammered, “I don’t know. She never really talked about it.” She needed to get out of this interrogation.

“Riiiiight,” Rico grunted. Skipper, too, was unconvinced: “I’m finding it very hard to trust you, Fisher.”

“If you don’t mind me saying,” Private interjected, “I think we can trust Elizabeth.” He didn’t seem sure of himself at all.

“What makes you say that?” Skipper asked, but at that moment Rico began to shout an almost unintelligible “Guys! Guys!” near the hatch, pointing upward to the surface. The penguins became aware of an almighty ruckus from above.

“Up top, men!” Skipper ordered. “And, uh, woman, I guess,” he added. “We’ll postpone this interrogation, but in the meantime, Fisher – I’ve got my eye on you.” Liz nodded to prove she understood, and then all five penguins darted to the surface.

The penguins leapt out of their habitat and slid quickly over to where the other zoo animals were gathered – almost all of them were there, crying out in fear, staring up at the sky.

“What’s going on here?” Skipper asked.

“Oh, penguins! I’m so glad you’re here! You have to help him!” Momma Duck rushed out from the crowd and pointed one wing up at the sky. The penguins looked: a tiny duckling could just be made out in the talons of a falcon, way above them.

“Eggy!” Private gasped.

“You know him?” Liz asked, surprised.

“Know him? We hatched him!” Skipper exclaimed, already formulating a plan in his head, but Liz had beaten him to it. She whipped out a knife and jumped with surprising precision given her splinted flipper up to the top of the clock tower. From up there she stood very still for a moment, and the crowd of animals died down, as though every one of them was holding their breath. She analysed the falcon’s grip on Eggy: firm, but sloppy – a slight cut to the leg and the duckling would drop.

“Somebody catch him!” She yelled behind her, as she drew the knife back in her good flipper. Skipper darted up to meet her, positioning himself underneath the falcon, flippers outstretched as Liz threw the blade with expert precision, watching it cut through the air, just grazing the falcon’s leg enough to cause it to drop Eggy out of shock and fly away. The duckling plummeted toward the ground, but Skipper was there waiting for him – the tiny creature fell right into his open flippers. He and Liz jumped down together to reunite Eggy with his worried mother.

“Oh, thank you! Skipper, and you – I don’t know your name,” she said to Liz.

“Elizabeth Fisher,” Liz smiled, “and I couldn’t have done it without Skipper.” For a moment the two forgot their differences and shared a companionable high-five amongst the cheering zoo animals, but Skipper quickly re-composed himself and drew away from her.

“Elizabeth, that was fantastic!” Private enthused on their way back to the habitat, to which Rico nodded and grinned. Liz smiled, feeling more comfortable until—

"Where's Kowalski?" Skipper stopped abruptly realising they were one Penguin short.
